An aspect of entrepreneurship within the movie Tucker: a man and his dreams is when Tucker decides to make the innovations to his vehicle. Prior to this vehicle there were no seat belts, wood dashes, no airbags, and many other safety features we see today missing. The public was under the assumption that vehicles were safe to use. Tucker saw that vehicle deaths were on the rise and took the opportunity, when the war was coming to an end, to innovate and make vehicles safer. He did this by; adding seatbelts, a center light to help with visibility, and a padded dash. These weren't the only innovations that Mr. Tucker added to his new car were changing the engine from the front to the back and adding independent wheel suspension. All these innovations could and were seen as more valuable to consumers since they saved consumers' lives. If I am not mistaken an Entrepeneur's job is to create value for their consumers. This was not ideal for the big three automakers at the time. They continued to find new ways to challenge Mr. Tucker such as artificially increasing the price of steel, and having the government try and put him in jail for “embezzlement”. This is due to another aspect of entrepreneurship we discussed in class called creative destruction. This is all very interesting, especially to me since I have a deep love for cars and entrepreneurship but also, since we can see the use of scarce materials and the bidding war we also discussed in class, as well as seeing creative destruction in a real-world example. This aspect of entrepreneurship affects society since it is satisfying a want/need society didn’t know they had since the big 3 didn’t allow them to realize they needed/wanted safety features. In the movie it was stated that the big 3 didn’t want Mr. Tucker to put safety features in his car since it would make the consumers think cars are not safe. (Side note – driving is the most dangerous thing a person does daily). Initially society sees this aspect of entrepreneurship as detrimental to the car industry. However, as the trial goes on, they see how Mr. Tucker was just trying to aid them in making vehicles safer. This grew support for Mr. Tucker and is what helped to find him innocent. The interaction between creative destruction and society is one that only provides more value to society than it takes. This is true since society sees the new product and values it more than the previous one. You can also call this society's opportunity cost. This can be seen since they are choosing to use the materials and other resources like the factory to make this new style of car, foregoing the old style of car that only provided value in going from A to B. Creative destruction also allows society to repurpose materials not being used anymore in the product for-gone. For example, the wood used in the dashboard and the metal no longer used to deliver the power from the front of the car to the back since the engine is now in the back.
