1.The interviewer is asking the interviewee (Keith Smith) about what he does and how it is different from other hospitals/places to have an operation performed. Keith Smith has almost reinvented the process/payment of having an operation. It is entrepreneurial because of the way that Keith innovated and changed the way his surgery centers operate from other ones. His biggest issue with the hospitals he used to work at was that they were overcharging their customers an outrageous amount but the customer wouldn't mind because insurance would cover a lot of that cost. What Keith did was contract surgeons and paid them on a job to job basis. He also looked at every necessary cost to perform a surgery and tried to do it for as cheap as possible to where the customer would have to pay less while the doctor gets a good paycheck. He also does not accept insurance and people may look at that and think “why would that be better for me”? On surface level it looks to be better. When you have a hospital charging 100,000 dollars for an operation and insurance gets it down to 13,000 dollars then that's great. But what Keith Smith is offering is a 10,000 dollar operation with cash in hand or check that gets you the same level (if not better)of doctor that can perform the exact same surgery, the only difference is you are saving 3,000 dollars if not more because once you do have to reach out to the insurance your insurance rates go up but if you pay with cash then everything remains the same. He took everything that we expect from a hospital visit and put it in a simplified version where exact prices are listed on his website and hardly any weight time because he contracts out doctors.
2.I find this interesting because I always have heard of doctors finding tiny ways to make the bill more expensive than it has to be and that's why you’re encouraged to ask for a paper receipt so you can find out if something like that happened but I did not realize how much more went into all of it. I did not know that sometimes hospitals will work with insurance agencies to raise the price purposefully on an operation so that the insurance can say they saved you more money when in reality they are doing the same thing whether the price is 50,000 or 500,000 you would pay the same amount with either. I also think it's interesting that his first customers were Canadian and even though they have free healthcare, they would still have to wait years to get operated on and how willing some people were to just pay to have an operation done quickly.
3A. The relationship between entrepreneur and society is beneficial to his customers. This is evident in the fact that 60% of his customers are not from Oklahoma. He creates a value that you can't get anywhere else to the point where people are willing to pay for a plane ticket, hotel costs and more just so they can get an operation done by him. Companies also have deals set up to where they exclusively use him if their employees need a medical procedure and there are many stories of him being compassionate and generous. 3B. I think he quit his job in the first place because of the effect his old job had on society. He morally felt wrong for the way they charged their customers and so he innovated and started his own practice that affected society in a much better way because of him being good and fair and caring about his customers by not raising prices. 3C. The interaction between the two is a positive one. He said that people can’t believe that his practice is a real thing and are grateful for how much money he is saving them. His contractors are also happy because they get paid nicely and sometimes more than salary workers at other hospitals and Kieth is happy because he can help people who are struggling and also he makes money off of it too.
