Describe the aspect in the interview.
In this interview entrepreneur and anesthesiologist, Keith Smith, talks about free market health care. Keith Smith is a co-founder of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma. They built a website to allow patients to place the mouse over the part of their body that hurt and it would give them a definite price of their procedure needed. They find the lowest price possible for their patients, do not have an insurance policy, and truly care about providing their patients with the best care.
Why is this interview interesting?
The many facts that were spoke about, I had no clue and really opened my eyes and that was interesting to me. Some things talked about being, the purpose behind why hospitals bump their prices up so high, why their waiting lists are so long, how they determine prices, the price that is reasonable compared to a regular hospital price, and so much more. High medical prices have become normal and it is crazy how unreasonable they are and how many people aren't able to get the procedure they need because of the common problems.
How does this aspect of entrepreneurship affect society?
This aspect of entrepreneurship affects society in a dramatic way. Hospitals are what allows people to get the help they need, this is where lives are saved and people are healed. Hospital prices play a huge roll; an enormous amount of people don't have the funds it usually takes to pay off their hospital bill because the prices are insanely high. This leads to people not being able to get the help they need or having to wait in month long waiting lists when they might not have that much time. Keith Smith's hospital allows all of these problems to disappear. He finds a doctor almost immediately for every patient, his prices are very low and he ensures that every provider is reliable. If there is a mistake or tragic accident they even work around the problem and often times lower the price or cut it completely down to supplies. Overall, converting hospitals over to this type of facility would benefit so many people, save so many lives and allow everyone to know they are able to go get the help they need and be able to afford it.
How does society affect this type of entrepreneurship?
Society is needed to run this type of business. It requires society to realize the downfall to regular hospitals and know that the Surgery Center of Oklahoma is the better choice. It takes patients noticing there is a problem with the normality of high hospital costs to switch over and grow this type of hospital so that more will switch over and put their patients first. The only way for a free market focus on health care to grow starts with society. They have to open their eyes and support the change so that more facilities will adopt the transparent pricing model. The more society supports this aspect of entrepreneurship the more society will benefit.
What is the interaction between this aspect of entrepreneurship and society like?
The interaction between this new type of health care and society is huge. Society is spending their money by choosing this hospital while also allowing them to work on their body. They are giving up the normal hospital that everyone is used to, to transfer to this relatively new facility. This a very important and extreme connection. Lots of trust has to be built along with a good reputation. In this case entrepreneurship and society highly lean on each other but if done correctly they both benefit in amazing ways.
