1798: Rigas Feraios (Velestinlis), Greek poet, political thinker, revolutionary, and pioneer of the Modern Greek Enlightenment, is strangled to death while in transit, as a prisoner, to Constantinople from Belgrade.
1920: Nikolaos Zorbas, Former Minister of Military Affairs, dies in Athens.
1975: Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis submits Greece's application for membership of the European Economic Community (EEC).
1994: The European Parliamentary election take place. PASOK comes out ahead with 37.6 percent. New Democracy follows with 32.6 percent, Political Spring with 8.6 percent, KKE 6.2 percent, and the Coalition with 6.2 percent.
