I am really enjoying contributing to BOINC and earning some Gridcoins for my contributions, but the fact remains that my contributions are to science first and foremost, while anything I earn from this is an added benefit. From reading the Steemit and Reddit posts it seems like this is the overall sentiment of the group and the main users that are posting arent at all shaken by the recent drop in Crypto prices, something that I find refreshing and drives me further to contribute to this project, in hopes to build an economy backed by its users contributions to science.
We have ourselves an unbelievable base of users, being by far the biggest contributor to BOINC smashing in a RAC of over a Billion credits a day! The strong majority of users here seem to be individuals contributing their part to expanding our knowledge in the sciences, but doesnt it seem like Enterprises have this massive untapped potential to do something inherently good while atleast partially covering their costs and kick starting the science economy?
For example, a company I used to work for had over 130 PCs, varying between modern i5s and i7s, turned off, doing nothing of a night time, that could be contributing just such a massive amount of computing power to our understanding of the sciences. This same company had a budget for charitable and social projects, but it seems that donating computing time to the sciences was never an option as a program needed to be installed and run on the computers (Security threat) and it just didnt seem to be as appealing when compared to donating to Unicef (Marketing). Suffice to say the project didnt see the light of day.
The purpose of this is really just to see how the community feels about potentially getting enterprise and business involved in shifting towards a science backed economy. Impact investing (where people do social projects and eventually expect a return on investment) is on the rise, and it seems that Gridcoin and BOINC fit very nicely into that category as the initial outlay of capital has been done when buying the workstations for the users, all that is then needed is energy costs.
In my opinion it would be nice to see business get involved in this, because as more users, be it individuals, business or enterprise, earn and accumulate Gridcoin more and more businesses will be inclined to accept and use Gridcoin for their own business transactions, driving up the value of Gridcoin, creating a vicious cycle where the ultimate winner is science.
Getting businesses involved should be philantropic first and foremost, with a little emphasis of the potential that Gridcoin has in the future.
I looked forward to reading your responses and insights.
Lets convince business that their idle hardware can be used to build an economy backed by science.
