Okay hear me out on this, I think this is a great idea. Maybe not today but this something to think about as the price of steem goes up (though we can do it at today's price). If you go to the account you will see that they have a shitload of the coin. This is a good thing because you know the company cares the coin goes up in value as they have a stake in it. Now what steemit does not do is vote with this account. But if they did, they could, in theory, determine where a third of the daily rewards go. Normally we would not want this to happen but if we had a two or three week event, like a major contest or film festival, that we agreed on, it could be a pretty big deal. I am not talking about a small contest, but a worldwide, event.
We will have to do some math here. I think there are 50,000 coins given for content a day (including curation which would go to the post as steemit would upvote the content in the first 15 minutes). We will use 30%, that means 15k a day and at the price of $2 that means $30,000 USD a day. After about 17 days we would have a $500,000 prize. And that is at todays price. That is a massive prize for a contest and it is only 30% of the rewards for a few weeks.
I am thinking of a film contest, like a Sundance or a TIFF (go Toronto :p). I know there are already film makers on here. We can run a global film event on here where the films are premiered and the users can keep the money from their posts on top of the prize money.
I know this is not on the things-to-do list at the moment with on-boarding, communities and apps, but something to think about in the future when the site is ready to advertise itself. And long term it will not cost a thing.
Would you be okay giving up the 30% of rewards for 2-3 weeks to fund a global contest like a film event?
We already gave up 100% for weeks after HF 18 for nothing :p
