Marley and me were taking a lunchtime stroll today and decided to stop off at my favourite local cafe for an awesome watermelon juice and a homemade vegan tamale, piled high with onions, chaya, and carrot, amongst other things. The name of this place, should you ever be in Playa del Carmen on 5th avenue nearer Playa 88 than Centro, is El Canto de Zenzontle. You can find them on Instagram HERE. The juices really are out of this world, as is the food.
I found out today that the place is named after the Mexican Mockingbird, which is an elegant and slender grey/ white/ black songbird with a very wide range of voice.
While chatting about this bird with one of the lovely cafe owners, she mentioned that they were giving away tree saplings, either for us to plant in a garden, or simply in the street. These saplings were Genipe fruit trees in the making, so we grabbed one and proceeded to find a spot along the street to plant it.
Marley enjoyed the walk so long as we stayed in the shade and finally we found our spot to plant it.
And here it is !! You'll see that we put rocks over the top. These keep the soil and roots moist, protecting the soil from the sun. In a few years time, this will be an abundant genipe tree that everyone passing can enjoy! How awesome!
