Depending on where you live it can be hard to find local people who share your interests. One of the greatest things about the internet is that you can find people who like the same things and form communities. I happen to enjoy playing guitar and some years ago I was looking around for podcasts about this. One of the best I found was Six String Bliss. This was a show by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. As well as the shows they had a cool community of people all around the world and they would put together themed albums a couple of times a year. This inspired me to get into recording and I featured on several of these.
One of the guys on the forum suggested a project to recreate Pink Floyd's song Hey You. It ended up with nine people across the US, UK and Germany taking part. We uses a MIDI file of the song and allocated people to replace each track to build up the song. Recordings were collected in a shared Dropbox folder and our producer put them all together. I did the lead vocal and some acoustic guitar. Several of us attempted the main acoustic guitar track, but struggled to play it until someone worked out that it's in 'Nashville' tuning that uses the high strings of a 12 string guitar. I have to say that out producer Jan did a fine job on my vocals and the whole track. He's really into the studio side of things and does it all from a desk in his living room.
Unfortunately this community has broken up since then. The podcast ended and people drifted away from the forum. I have met a few of them and stay in touch with some. There may well be more collaborations in the future.
