My friend lives thousands of miles from me. We’d been trying to talk since before Christmas but what with travel and family commitments we just hadn’t managed it. We had so much to catch up on. And today was the day we agreed to Skype!
I was waiting eagerly at my computer at the appointed time, when a message came. My friend had planned to Skype from a quiet cafe during her lunch break but when she got there all the seats were taken!
‘Give me 5 mins!’ she messaged. ‘I’m going to find somewhere else to sit!’
I waited, imagining her dashing through the cold wintry streets, while I sat with the air conditioning running full blast. Then, the ringing tone - it was her! But this cafe was so noisy we could hardly hear each other. My friend had to eat lunch so we struggled on with the call, each trying to shout to be heard, and straining to hear the other.
But you know what? It didn’t matter. It was so good to talk again that we just kept on shouting at each other and my friend didn’t even care that the whole cafe could hear her conversation.
So today what made me happy is friendship and the technology that allows us to stay in touch even if it isn’t always perfect.
