The first time I visited Kilauea, I loved the kahili ginger. It's fragrant and beautiful. And it's everywhere on the mountain. When they're blooming, it's lovely to see. However, since then, I've learned that they're an invasive species. They're very aggressive in taking over territory and are crowding out the native plants. Efforts to control the spread of ginger are only keeping them at bay. It is a good example of a beautiful plant that just doesn't belong.
