We all need Vitamin D and there's a good chance that a lot of us are dificient in that area. Having said that, I think it's important to point out that over-exposure to the UV rays could be harmful and might increase our chances of certain typs of skin cancers! If you are caucasian and have a lighter skin tone, then you would be at a higher risk than someone who is naturally darker.
I remember playing volleyball on the beach years ago and because I was going in and out of the cool water throughout the day, I didn't realize that I was getting "fried". As you can imagine, I was sunburned severely and it took me a long time to recover from that scorching experience.
Tanning beds have also been a rising concern, epecially for young people as studies are now suggesting an elevated risk for possible skin cancer development. So what's the conclusion? Bottom line is that we all like a nice tan as it gives us a bronzed-glow that looks attractive.
However, everything should be done in moderation and I believe that this is the key! Get some sun and get some Vitamin D, but do it in a resonsible fashion. Make sure to use proper sunscreen ,when necessary, and always stay up to date on the UV index/ weather updates before your day in the Sun.
So have fun at the beach but don't forget to bring a little sunscreen!
