I like to go down on deep rabbit holes on the internet, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland worthy trips to the most seemingly random avenues of information that is readily available to us, 24/7, 365, with a high speed internet connection. What a time to be alive. As I am quite a curious cat and big on self development, and I just like knowing things, no matter how non-useful they might seem at the surface, I often spend hours and hours searching information about a certain topic, seeing where it leads me.
Starting this particular rabbit hole comes from my search for better skin health, which I have been increasingly struggling with for the past years. I spend a lot of time and energy in search, trial and error to find what it is that can make my skin better. My sister happened to mention a chemical compound called Methylsulfonylmethane to me in passing when talking about skin, and I went down on that rabbit hole to search for what it can possibly do for my skin. I’ve now been on it for almost 6 months and it’s basically a miracle worker, which I could have not believed before trying myself. But more on that skin story on a later date, maybe.
What I did not know about Methylsulfonylmethane, commonly referred to as MSM, was that is seems to have a very interesting side effect. And this is a whole other rabbit hole I got led down to.
My sister, again, happened to ask me if I had had an increasing amount of weird dreams as of late after starting to take MSM supplement. I hadn’t thought of that prior to her asking, cause I have always seen nightmares and crazy dreams quite often, but after she mentioned it, I started to take note of how frequent they were becoming. This is obviously not a very scientific and controlled study on myself, because it’s hard to remember how often I would have the dreams prior to MSM, but I can pretty confidently say that my fucked up dreams are even more crazy than before and come almost every time I get some shut eye. My dreams are rarely happy-go-lucky, so I am not particularly excited about this side effect.
After talking to my sister about it, I decided to take it to the internet to see if this was just a fluke, or have other people had same sort of experience on MSM, or if there had been studies done about it.
MSM hasn’t been studied that much, but it is an FDA approved supplement, non-toxic, well tolerated, good for joints, lowering inflammation blablabla. All this I had already read about prior to purchasing my first pack of MSM. I was in search of the link, if any, between vivid dreams/nightmares and MSM.
I finally came across a random little bit of mention in a hair forum where someone had wrote:
MSM supposedly decalcifies your pineal gland, which is thought to be your Third Eye.
Jackpot, new rabbit hole, here we go.
What is a pineal gland, what is its function, how does it effect us, and what does MSM do for it. And what is the Third Eye, something to do with consciousness I think. Cue hours of reading.
No offence to anyone, but this is some major hippie shit, which I am not into. But I am ofcourse curious so I read. Higher awareness and sensitivity, check, vivid dreams, check, seeing patterns, check, headaches, check. The list goes on, fun. From what I read and IF you believe in that stuff, I’ve had my eyes, all three of them, open all my life, now just even more than before. And I gotta say, I am not sure if I am a fan of it.
It’s nice being smart and good at problems solving and just being aware of your surroundings, but it’s not fun being overly sensitive to sounds and lights, and seeing fucked up dreams.
To end this post I’d like to quote my brother from when he was little:
When I sleep, I SLEEP, I don’t look at pictures!
he said so in a frustrated tone after listening to us talk about dreams and mom asking him has he been seeing any lately.
Lucky you little brother, lucky you.
