A lot of fake products have found their way into the Nigerian markets. From fake processed foods to fake cosmetic products. Fake electrical appliances, fake shoes and clothing and even fake drugs. There is almost always just a fake of everything you can think of. With fake drugs although, the effects are adverse because it is a matter of one's health; life & death.

In 1995, in one of the western Nigerian States, an asthmatic patient acquired a counterfeit inhaler. This is one of the saddest occurrences depicting the effect of counterfeit drugs.
She had simply reached out for her inhaler when she had an attack only to discover that it was of no use. She tried her best to reach a hospital as soon as possible but passed out on the hospital porch and never regained consciousness.

Asthma wasn't the cause of her death, the counterfeit drug was. Like her, many have died from the scourge of fake drugs in this country.

Estimates put the number of counterfeit drug victims, resulting in death, are in the range of 120,000 to 1,000,000.
The estimated number of people that die due to counterfeit drugs is estimated to be in the range of 120,000 to 1,000,000 every year. These are individuals who are receiving the wrong, fake or simply dangerous drugs being misrepresented as a different drug.

Supply Chain Cost

Drugs are being sold in some parts of the world at three times production price. The price of drugs are tripled before reaching consumers all because of high supply chain costs. Companies in an effort to regain these monies are forced to push out these fees to the buyers causing the cost of these drugs to sky rocket.
