I attended Chicago’s Good Food Expo today and happened upon an item I’ve never seen before. Stopping at the booth, Tomato Mountain Farm from Wisconsin, I found some lovely produce.
But I didn’t recognize this item - it was a big as a red bell pepper:
The farmer said it was a radish, a watermelon radish. I’ve seen big radishes, but none this size. I was hesitant to try it. Then she showed me pictures of it sliced, and I realized it didn’t get its name from its size.
When I got home I made some guacamole and sliced in to the radish. Absolutely beautiful! How does it taste? Magnificent flavor! Not as bitter as a typical red radish, and a perfect complement to the salt and lime flavors in my guacamole. Maybe a hint of turnip.
Wish you could taste it!
