Hypothyroidism is a condition wherein the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormones. It is very important to monitor the hormone levels especially if you are suspecting a possible thyroid problem. Untreated hypothyroidism leads to these 6 complications:
1. Nerve Damage
In some cases, hypothyroidism can trigger peripheral neuropathy. This condition damages the peripheral nerves that connect the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body.
2. Puberty Problems
Children and adolescents who have an underactive thyroid gland may have problems during their puberty phase. According to Dr. Andrew J. Bauer, medical director of The Thyroid Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the standard treatment for this is levothyroxine. This is a synthetic replacement hormone that compensates with the thyroid gland.
3. Mental Problems
It is not clearly understood what's the link between depression and hypothyroidism. But some experts suggest that depression could be a possible symptom of hypothyroidism.
4. Birth Defects And Infertility
Insufficient levels of thyroid hormone can interfere with the release of an egg from ovulation, which impairs fertility. Maternal hypothyroidism is also linked to a higher risk of birth defects, developmental and intellectual problems.
5. Goiter
This condition may lead to an enlarged thyroid gland - located at the base of the neck. The risk factors of goiter include female sex, age over 40 years, inadequate dietary intake of iodine, residence in an endemic area, and a family history.
6. Heart Disease
Hypothyroidism may lead to other heart complications such as irregular heart rhythm and the build-up of fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion).
