This is just to create awareness and let people atleast understand the early signs and to know more about this type of cancer. Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that forms in certain types of nerve tissue. it most frequently starts from one of the adrenal glands, but can also develop in the neck, chest, abdomen, or spine. symptoms may include bone pain, a lump in the abdomen, neck, or chest, or chest, or a painless bluish lump under skin.
Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor of infancy and the third most common cancer in children after leukemia and brain cancer. about one in every 7,000 children is affected at some time. about 90% of cases occur in children less than 5 years old and it is rare in adults. of cancer deaths in children, about 15% are due to neuroblastoma. The disease was first described in the 1800s. Age, stage, and biological features encountered in tumor cells are important prognostic factors and are used for risk stratification and treatment assignment.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
The first symptoms are fatigue, loss of appetite, fever, and joint pain. symptoms depend on primary tumor locations and mestastes.
- A tumor in the chest may cause breathing problems
- Bone lesions in the legs and hips may cause pain and limping.
- Bulging eyes
- Painless, bluish lumps under the skin in babies
- Swollen stomach in babies
- Inability to move a body part
KEY POINTS
Just like every other cancer, once neuroblastoma has been diagnosed, tests are done to find out if cancer has spread from where it started to the other parts of the body.
There are different types of treatment for patients with neuroblastoma.
Children with neuroblastoma should have their treatment planned by a team of doctors who are experts in treating childhood cancer, especially neuroblastoma.
Treating for neuroblastoma may cause side effects.
Seven types of standard treatment are used:
- OBSERVATION
- SURGERY
- RADIATION THERAPY
- IODINE 131-MIBG THERAPY
- CHEMOTHERAPY
- HIGH DOSE CHEMOTHERAPY AND RADIATION THERAPY WITH STEM CELL RESCUE
- TARGETED THERAPY
