I woke up this morning/afternoon to an unsettling email from Amazon. Apparently they are now offering healthcare services.
I shouldn't let this disturb me, should I? After all, Amazon is owned by JP Morgan/Chase, which also owns Subaru, something I learned in 2019 when I bought the orange landship. I've been learning that other companies are also one in the same, even those that appear to be in competition with one another. It's not a new thing. I wrote a paper about this for some college kid years back. But it's still unsettling.
I struggle to find that balance between making enough money to be able to do the things I love while keeping my earnings below the income threshold that would prevent me from receiving state healthcare. I once crossed that line, and when the insurance mandate was passed, I ended up paying $50 a month for health insurance with a $9k deductible. I felt like a car. When I got back on state benefits it was like a homecoming.
Every time the renewal comes up I fear losing them.
With health care being privatized the way it is, and with the seemingly infinite decline of hope for human equality, the thought of the monster corporation Amazon sinking its claws into the health care industry scares me. Will Amazon compete with state benefits? Are we getting closer to complete corporate domination of American healthcare? What will happen to my rights over my own body if/when this domination happens?
But maybe it will be great! Maybe routine treatments will be affordable. Maybe my Prime membership will get me to the front of the line at the Urgent Care Clinic for just $3.99. Maybe there will be discounts. Black Friday sales on surgeries.
