I think I need a change...or better yet, an improvement. I have been a residential care aide for seniors for the past 10 years and I just realized that with the amount of senior citizens that will require care about to double over the course of 3-10 years, I need to get with the program. I was astounded to find out yesterday that in some rural towns in BC, the wait time to have a caregiver come to your home could sometimes be 2 days! This is nuts! What if your grandma is sitting in her tub and can't get out or maybe she missed a batch of pills due to forgetfulness? I don't like it.
I started my career in care after doing volunteer work helping the elderly with shopping and medications. I fell in love with the clients and realized it was what I wanted to do as a career.
So, I think my next venture will be a course in Gerontology-the scientific study of old age, the process of aging, and the particular problems of old people. I recently discovered this new course in our local college and I thought...why not?
This will give me an even greater bank of knowledge to work with during critical times. I am excited to start this new adventure and be part of the solution to better care for our seniors. Have you hugged a senior today?
