Cartoons ruled my childhood. There was nary an animated series that escaped my viewing back in the 80s and early 90s. I’ll admit some didn’t win my dedication but chances are I saw at least an episode or knew the theme song. Maybe a month ago a friend on Facebook had trouble thinking of the name of cartoon involving a pack of dogs. After reading through some of the suggestions I thought of one that wasn’t mentioned, Rude Dog. Now I’m going to talk about one of the answers that was given because recently began mentioning his frustration with a brat in his neighborhood which he refers to as Riff-Raff from the Heathcliff series. I’ve been known to use that term to describe undesirables that I don’t want to hang around because I got bored with dregs.
This morning I looked up the theme on YouTube because it became an earworm for me. I only had the “Heathcliff, Heathcliff” part down and I would mumble the rest. When I played the video I was blown away on how catchy it still is but what can I expect when it was written by 80s cartoon theme kings, Saban and Levy. I then had to look up what the history of the character was and to see if it had a reboot. Like other cartoons Heathcliff had its origin in the comic strips but my paper didn’t carry Heathcliff just Garfield. I loved Garfield but it was only his holiday cartoons that was really worth watching. I didn’t enjoy the series as much as Heathcliff. Heathcliff had that Looney Tunes attitude and with good reason, Mel Blanc provided the voice.
I might just have to do more blogs about some cartoons that are being lost to time. Heathcliff was supposed to get a reboot movie but it was scrapped. The internet is keeping characters alive and so should I.
