Drugs will always be heavily tied into hip hop culture. Currently, lean and Xanax are the most popular in the community. The opinion towards these drugs is shifting; they are becoming heavily criticized.
Last week, Chicago rapper, Fredo Santana was found dead on the floor by his girlfriend. He had been treated in the past for liver and kidney problems. It is likely that his heavy lean use played a part in his death.
Additionally, 2 months ago, Lil Peep was found dead on his tour bus when his manager went to check on him. His death was caused from taking Xanax laced with fentanyl. The hip hop community was hit hard by the premature death of these two influential rappers. I think that instances like these will help push the anti-drug movement.
Rappers are starting to move away from these more serious drugs. For example, Lil Pump said on Instagram
"I don't take xans no more fuck Xanax 2018" - Lil Pump
Also, Lil Xan started an anti-xan movement called "Xanarchy". Lil Xan was able to stop taking Xanax without rehab, and he is pushing his fans to stay away from it.
I am happy to see that these drugs are starting to have a negative connotation. Some responsibility does fall on rappers to portray drugs in a negative light for their fans.
