It was the summer of 08 and A Milli and Lolipop blazed in bars and on the radio. Tha Carter 3 released on June 10, 2008 -- had been hyped all spring after a series of delays and leaks, however Lil Wayne kept fans dangling with a string of raw mix tapes. Some people were still deciding if he was lyrical or just leaned out. However, the album was pure fire and cemented his place on hip hop Mount Rushmore.
Lil Wayne thrived to out work every rapper and have a continual stream of clever eating pussy and drug dealing sports metaphors that resonated with people across genres. He paved the way for the rock star vibe in a hip hop all star and gave an outlet to what is now probably known as SAD BOY RAP. While that is whack af, Lil Wayne was the first to get a little weird compared to other rappers at the time. He really made a the nerd skater rocker look a part of his swag and audiences gripped on while Nas was proclaiming hip hop was dead.
Tha Carter III's lead smash hit single, "Lollipop", started at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks after its premiere. It was Lil Wayne's most successful solo single in his career up to that point and he found himself winning one Grammy Award, a BET Award, and an MTV VMA. The song was a "bubblegum" pop track with a lot of edge and swag.
The track could be found bumping at a street light or in the club.
The second single, "A Milli", was a top ten hit and was praised as one of the best songs of 2008 and really created the buzz that made the album become known as a classic for the summer and hip hop history. After Jay-Z seemingly passed the torch to Lil Wayne in the track Mr. Carter. He dropped his own free style to the A Mili beat which some thought could be a diss as he called his track a "A Bili" and dropped it right before Tha Carter 3 album release.
