For more than a century, radiotherapy has been used as a usual treatment in certain diseases. From the discovery of X-rays in 1895 by Wilhelm Röntgen, and the properties of radio (Ability to emit radioactive particles) by Marie Curie, this technique would be developed. Both Wilhelm and Marie are the parents of radiotherapy.
Radiotherapy is a type of ontological treatment that uses radiation to eliminate cancerous tumor cells in the part of the body where they are applied, destroying the malignant cells, preventing them from growing and reproducing.
The first report of a cure through radiotherapy dates from 1899, although it will be on January 8, 1914 when the Middlesex hospital in London uses the radio for the first time to treat cancer. Celedonio Calatayud, the first Spanish doctor to use radiotherapy in the fight against cancer, introduced this technique in Spain in 1906.
