I live in Brazil but my nationality is Dutch. What many people don’t know is that there has been a connection between the two countries in the 17th century. John Maurice of Nassau, prince of Nassau-Siegen sailed on behalf of the Dutch Indian Company in 1636 to South America where he landed near Recife in the state of Pernambuco. He extended the Dutch possesions along the coastel area in the North East of Brazil and acted as governor. He built a beautiful house in the small city of Olinda, called the Red House. It is still there and you can visit it. Dutch Brazil ceased to exist in 1654 and came into possession of Portugal.
