I came across a person that I thought was very intriguing, so I decided to do a Who Am I for them to see if anyone else knows about the accomplishments. I'd be impressed if you know the answer without looking it up.
I was born into slavery on April 5, 1839 in Beaufort SC.
In May 1862 I stole a Confederate military ship
I disguised myself as the Captain
I used the secret code book and hand signals to pass Confederate guard ships.
I rescued many slaves and their families.
I later escaped to freedom
After the Civil War I returned to Beaufort and purchased my former master's house.
I ran for Congress in 1868 and won
I died of malaria and diabetes on February 23, 1915 in Beaufort SC.
