Prior to the acquisition of the English, almost all the north Bengal area was Ghoraghat government (district) .. and the ruling was Ghoraghat town.
Mir Karam Ali, the last faujdar of this government, was defeated by the English commander Mr. Cottrell. As a result, the whole northern population was under the patronage of the English.
