I don't get why we still need a Black History Month. Shouldn't we honor Martin Luther's dream of pretending black people don't exist once there are a handful of movies with interracial couples and one black President?
As someone who is afraid to the point of confusion by the very existence of black people, I yearn for the day when the evils of active bigotry are replaced by the passive bigotry of just ignoring history and keeping my large, white head in the sand.
I'm not asking anyone to "get over it," I'm just asking for you people to stop making me so uncomfortable with all this "segregation was legal only 56 years ago" talk.
I'm a liberal, and an ally, but I think Dr. Luther would agree with me on this. We can only heal as a nation if everyone will please stop talking about what we are as a nation, because it makes me super weird even though I voted for Obama in '08.
