Originally on this site was built a hunting lodge in the 1920's. Anson W. Hard bought out the members and make the more than 1,000 acres his personal hunting preserve. He had a Lodge/home built but was destroyed in a fire. A new grand home was built after Anson's death by his wife and family in 1937.
The home and land was sold to Suffolk County in the early 1960's for 2 1/2 million and became Suffolk County's first public park. Eventually the building became the headquarters for the Suffolk County Park Police.
