By the 1920's, the influence of Christianity was already deep in the consciousness of the populace.
The Baptist church was formed by a group of elders that broke out of C.M.S church which was the only church then. The presiding priest of C.M.S church was Rev. I. Kidd.

By 25th November 1921, the first sunday service was held on a piece of land donated by Oba Eweka. The serice was presided over by Rev. Louis Mayfield Duval. This site is presently occupied by Benin United Baptist Church and Emokpae primary school named after the first Benin Christian Priest, Rev. Obadiah Odiase Emokpae.
The road was also named Mission road after the Baptist Mission. Roman Catholic Mission was to come into being in 1924 just a stone throw from the site of The Baptist Mission house.
