Day 4 of Road trip: Port Nolloth Museum.
On day 4 of our road trip, I got up early to go for an early morning walk on the beach, as we planned to travel to Hondeklipbaai and we still wanted to visit the Port Nolloth Museum.
It is in the middle of the winter, but it was a great day!! After my walk, we had breakfast, packed the car and departed to the museum.
To oiur surprise we found that the museum only opened at 10:00 - time just have another meaning at these small coastal towns!!
We then decided to go look for some coffee to drink along the beachfront, while we waited.
This is where we found this beautiful church, almost on the beach!!
Just as we parked, a person looking like a Hobo approached us and asked us if we wanted some uncut diamonds or snoek?? (Snoek is a local fish). I informed him that, I wanted neither, and just wanted some coffee at the restaurant across the road. He then mentioned that we should visit the museum!!
We had a nice coffee and then proceeded to the museum, which has a very strange outside and entrance.
Surprise, surprise, the curator of the museum turned out to be the same person who looked like a Hobo earlier. He is also the person who collected everything and he is the owner as well.
You can read more about George Moyses , who was a navy diver, turned diamond diver. (This article is from 2009, thus he is now 70 years old)
The museum is nothing like any other museum, I have seen before, it is packed with a lot of stuff and consists of only two small rooms.
The town of Port Nolloth is known for it's diamond diving industry and although there is a lot of stuff in the museum, the entire visit is made by all the history and diamond diving stories George is telling - he is actually the museum!! What makes it even nicer, is that he basically talks to you on a one on one basis!! You can ask him questions about the diamond diving industry and history and he answers!!
I must say that this really was one of the most interesting museum visits I ever had!! I did not think that a small place like this could be this interesting!! It just shows you never judge a book by its cover!!
After the visit we hit the road towards our next destination - Hondeklipbaai!!
I hope you enjoyed the post and that you have a wonderful day.
