The temple was built in 7th century A.D ( according to archaeological reports) during the reign of Chalukya Kings.
The word "Kopeshwar" itself comes from Sanskrit word "Kopa" Which means anger.
But it was either remained incomplete or get invaded. So the renovation had happened during the 12th- 13th century by Shilahara Kings.
When Daksha Prajapati used bad words for Lord Shiva, Ma sati Self immolated in the yagnya fire and the Bhagwan Shiva got very angry so the name derived were "Kopeshwar Mahadev"

The lattice window with the flowers carved at intersections is the Signature of Chalukyan Architecture.
The temple has 12 inscriptions in which one of which is Devnagiri, one of the inscriptions mentioned the renovation of the temple dating to 1204 by Yadawa kings of Deogiri.
This means the temple existed even before the 12th CE.
