Finally! The guardian of our channel is listed on UNESCO World Heritage List as part of defense line that former Republic of Venice held in Dalmatia, Croatia. That was decided today on 41st session of the UNESCO Committee.
St Nicolas Fortress was built between 1540 and 1547 on the little island of Ljuljevac at the enterance of the St Anthony Channel. The fortress was named after little church that was built on the island before. It was built by Venetian architect and builder Gian Girolamo Sanmicheli to prevent Turks and other hostile forces to pass through the channel.
The fortress has 32 cannon ports and they are located at the top of the fortress and on the sea level. Lower parts were built of stone and upper of tufa and brick for better defense of cannon balls.
The shape of the fortress is preserved even today and it looks fascinating from the air.
I visited the fortress many times and all photos are originally mine.
