¡Saludos, gente! Durante los días complicados nada mejor que un café para despejar la mente un poco; así que paso por aquí a hablarles de mi experiencia esta semana en De Cake, Repostería.
No sé si les pasa que hacen contacto con alguno de los encargados de un café y les cae tan bien que, aunque abran otros miles alrededor y sean incluso de mejor calidad, terminan siempre volviendo a ese lugar. Eso es exactamente lo que nos ha pasado con esta pequeña carretilla ubicada en el Centro Comercial La Vela, en mi Isla de Margarita.
Hey, everyone! On tough days, there's nothing better than a coffee to clear your head a little, so I'm stopping by to tell you about my experience this week at De Cake, Repostería.
I don't know if you ever have that experience where you meet one of the managers at a coffee shop and like them so much that, even though there are thousands of other places around that are even better, you always end up going back to that one. That's exactly what happened to us with this little cart located in the La Vela Shopping Center on my island of Margarita.
Nosotros estuvimos cuando inauguraron esa porción nueva del centro comercial (que no tiene mucho tiempo) y este pequeño lugar era el único que ofrecía café. Mis papás, que son muy sociables, le preguntaron sobre el origen del café al dueño; estuvieron bastante tiempo hablando con él sobre la vida y de todo un poco.
El dueño demostró ser una persona humilde (a pesar de tener un puesto en el centro comercial más caro de la isla) y un ser humano excepcional, cosa que hizo "clic" de inmediato con mis padres. Yo, la verdad, siempre estoy enfocada en mis cosas: el teléfono, redes sociales, atendiendo pacientes o respondiendo WhatsApp, mientras me tomo mi café. Es mi forma real de desconexión; no desconecto del todo, pero el café hace que todo sea más llevadero y fluya más lento.
We were there when they opened that new part of the mall (which hasn't been open long) and this little place was the only one offering coffee. My parents, who are very sociable, asked the owner about the origin of the coffee; they spent quite a long time talking to him about life and a little bit of everything.
The owner proved to be a humble person (despite having a stall in the most expensive shopping center on the island) and an exceptional human being, which immediately clicked with my parents. To be honest, I'm always focused on my own things: my phone, social media, seeing patients, or responding to WhatsApp messages while I drink my coffee. It's my way of disconnecting; I don't disconnect completely, but coffee makes everything more bearable and slows things down.
El asunto es que ese centro ha crecido a una velocidad vertiginosa y han abierto muchísimos cafés nuevos: más grandes, más bonitos, con más variedad en las cartas y más aesthetics, como dirían algunos. He tenido la dicha de visitarlos casi todos y la verdad es que cada uno es diferente y espectacular. Son amplios e, incluso, tienen su propio espacio físico delimitado, lo cual hace que no se sienta como si estuvieras en medio del pasillo, pero tampoco encerrado en un local comercial.
Sin embargo, todos tienen algo en común que no posee De Cake Repostería, y es lo que me hace volver: el trato personal de su dueño. Los otros cafés son grandes y tienen personal o encargados, pero ninguno cuenta con la presencia de sus propios dueños atendiéndote. Pueden estar ahí, pero no te sirven ellos mismos, y eso hace una gran diferencia.
The thing is, this area has grown at breakneck speed and lots of new cafés have opened: bigger, prettier, with more variety on the menus and more aesthetics, as some would say. I've been lucky enough to visit almost all of them, and the truth is that each one is different and spectacular. They are spacious and even have their own defined physical space, which means you don't feel like you're in the middle of a hallway, but you're not enclosed in a commercial space either.
However, they all have something in common that De Cake Repostería doesn't have, and that's what keeps me coming back: the personal touch of its owner. The other cafés are large and have staff or managers, but none of them have their owners there to serve you. They may be there, but they don't serve you themselves, and that makes a big difference.
En los otros lugares jamás nos han atendido mal; el servicio es excelente. Pero nosotros conectamos con la historia de superación de este dueño y su emprendimiento. Además, fue el primero en llegar al lugar, antes que el resto.
Él se mantiene ahí, aun cuando su café es solo una carretilla rústica (que a mí me parece muy vintage y bonita). No tiene un espacio delimitado, sino unas sillas y mesas sencillas rodeadas de plantas. No tendrá tanta variedad en su menú, pero les aseguro que si quieren un buen café con una atención agradable, siempre lo van a encontrar aquí. Por cierto, la pastelería la elaboran ellos mismos y también ofrecen servicio de catering para eventos.
We have never received poor service at the other places; the service is excellent. But we connect with the story of this owner's triumph over adversity and his entrepreneurial spirit. What's more, he was the first to arrive at the location, before the rest.
He remains there, even though his café is just a rustic cart (which I think is very vintage and pretty). He doesn't have a defined space, just some simple chairs and tables surrounded by plants. He may not have a wide variety on his menu, but I assure you that if you want good coffee and friendly service, you'll always find it here. By the way, they make their own pastries and also offer catering services for events.
En esta oportunidad aún tenían los detalles navideños en la mesa, lo cual me pareció muy tierno. El café estaba perfecto, igual que siempre. Ojalá la gente los siga visitando; veo que los otros locales ahora están llenos todo el tiempo, pero el de él no tanto, lo cual me genera mucha tristeza. Ojalá la gente apreciara más lo bonito, lo auténtico y apoyaran más los pequeños emprendimientos, porque esta es la verdadera forma de apoyarnos los unos y salir adelante como país.

This time, they still had Christmas decorations on the table, which I thought was very sweet. The coffee was perfect, as always. I hope people continue to visit them; I see that the other places are now full all the time, but his isn't so much, which makes me very sad. I hope people will appreciate beauty and authenticity more and support small businesses, because this is the real way to support each other and move forward as a country.
