El arte de la relojería. // The art of watchmaking.

Hola Hivers, desde el comienzo de la humanidad, el hombre siempre ha tenido la necesidad determinar con exactitud el tiempo. Hoy quiero comentarles sobre una importante profesión que en Cuba ha sido el sostén económico de muchas familias (incluida la mía). Según tengo entendido en nuestra isla no se fabrican relojes, pero si se hacen servicios de reparación y mantenimiento, a todas las personas que se dedican a realizar esta actividad se les conoce como "relojeros".

Hello Hivers, since the beginning of mankind, man has always had the need to accurately determine the time. Today I want to tell you about an important profession that in Cuba has been the economic support of many families (including mine). As I understand in our island watches are not manufactured, but if repair and maintenance services are made, all people who are engaged in this activity are known as "watchmakers".

La relojería es una forma de trabajo como cualquier otra, las personas que se dedican a ello deben tener conocimientos principalmente de electrónica o mecánica, en dependencia de los tipos de relojes que tengan que reparar. La mayoría de los relojeros en Cuba se dedican al diagnóstico, el ensamblaje de piezas y componentes de los relojes de cuarzo, es decir analógicos y digitales, principalmente realizan los cambios de baterías y sustitución de circuitos electrónicos.

Watchmaking is a form of work like any other, people who are dedicated to it must have knowledge mainly of electronics or mechanics, depending on the types of watches they have to repair. Most of the watchmakers in Cuba are dedicated to the diagnosis, the assembly of parts and components of quartz watches, that is to say analog and digital, mainly they make the changes of batteries and replacement of electronic circuits.

Con los avances tecnológicos en el campo de la electrónica y el abanico de funciones que ofrecen los relojes inteligentes, hoy en día los relojes mecánicos (de cuerda y automático) han perdido popularidad, esto se fundamenta principalmente por lo costosa y compleja que puede resultar ser la fabricación de estos. Por tanto, en la actualidad no existen muchas personas que dedican a la reparación de relojes mecánicos.

With the technological advances in the field of electronics and the range of functions offered by smart watches, nowadays mechanical watches (winding and automatic) have lost popularity, this is mainly based on how expensive and complex it can be to manufacture them. Therefore, there are currently not many people dedicated to the repair of mechanical watches.

El objetivo de este artículo es compartir la historia de un relojero holguinero que con su innovación y sabiduría ha recuperado centenas de relojes automáticos. Su nombre: Héctor, es mi papá y su pasión desde siempre fue la mecánica. Desde pequeño le gustaba armar y desarmar mecanismos complejos, cuentan los vecinos y amigos que lo conocen desde la etapa de niñez, que arreglaba todos los objetos que tuvieran piezas y mecanismos que se pudieran desarmar. Posteriormente en su juventud logró estudiar ingeniería mecánica y comenzó a trabajar en talleres, principalmente diseñando planos y piezas para la reparación de camiones y maquinaria pesada para equipos de la construcción.

The purpose of this article is to share the story of a watchmaker from Holguín who with his innovation and wisdom has recovered hundreds of automatic watches. His name: Héctor, he is my dad and his passion has always been mechanics. Since he was a child he liked to assemble and disassemble complex mechanisms, neighbors and friends who have known him since his childhood say that he used to fix all the objects that had parts and mechanisms that could be disassembled. Later in his youth he managed to study mechanical engineering and began to work in workshops, mainly designing plans and parts for the repair of trucks and heavy machinery for construction equipment.

En su tiempo libre intentaba reparar relojes a familiares y amigos que confiaban en su habilidad. Poco a poco fue perfeccionando su trabajo, conoció a otros profesionales de este oficio, con los cuales aprendió muchas técnicas y a través de ellos obtuvo diversas literaturas que sentaron las bases de los conocimientos de hoy.

In his spare time he tried to repair watches for family and friends who trusted in his ability. Gradually he perfected his work, met other professionals of this trade, with whom he learned many techniques and through them he obtained various literatures that laid the foundations of today's knowledge.

Se mantuvo realizando estás tareas como un pasatiempo hasta que le llegó la jubilación. Por necesidades de la vida a la edad de 60 tuvo que convertir su hobby en su principal fuente de ingresos para poder mantener a una esposa y sus dos hijos.. Tuvo que conseguir por distintas vías herramientas e instrumentos necesarios para la actividad, así como piezas de repuesto para sustituciones de elementos irrecuperables. Algunos de estas herramientas son destornilladores de precisión, lupas y lentes, navajas abre cajas, alicates, mordazas, aceiteras, extractores de aguja, etc. Otros dispositivos que no pudo localizar en el mercado tuvo que fabricarlos y adaptarlos a las necesidades.

He kept doing these tasks as a hobby until his retirement. At the age of 60 he had to turn his hobby into his main source of income to support his wife and two children. He had to obtain tools and instruments necessary for the activity, as well as spare parts for the replacement of irrecoverable elements. Some of these tools are precision screwdrivers, magnifying glasses and lenses, box cutters, pliers, vice grips, oilers, needle extractors, etc. Other devices that he could not find on the market he had to manufacture and adapt to the needs.

Hoy en día prácticamente repara cualquier marca, pero la gran mayoría son relojes automáticos Orient, Seikos, Rolex, Citizen e Invicta. Su principal preocupación es la desaparición de este oficio. El argumenta que a día de hoy con la escasez de relojeros mecánicos que existen en el país, sumado a que tampoco se cuenta con centros educativos que contribuya a la formación de relojeros, el futuro no es esperanzador. Además, también es cierto que la gran mayoría de los jóvenes no les interesa el oficio, ya que este trabajo tan preciso requiere de mucha paciencia y concentración.
