Hoy no planeaba cortar cabello, pero en Cuba siempre hay que estar listo. Mi cliente me solicitó de urgencia porque tenía un compromiso importante y necesitaba un cambio de look rápido. No hubo tiempo de preparar nada, así que saqué mi sillón, aproveché la luz natural del sol y monté mi barbería improvisada.
Quizás vean algo de desorden o ropa tendida de fondo en las fotos, pero aquí resolvemos sobre la marcha. ¡Lo que importa es la técnica!
No soy un barbero con 20 años de experiencia, soy un novato con muchísima hambre de aprender. Sin embargo, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes algo que ha cambiado mi forma de trabajar: El Visagismo (el estudio del rostro) y cómo aplicarlo para solucionar problemas reales.
Aquí tenemos a mi cliente. Antes de encender la máquina, siempre analizo la cabeza:
El Rostro: Tiene una estructura ovalada.
El Problema: El cabello en los laterales estaba muy crecido, dándole una forma redonda a su cabeza. Pero el mayor reto era que tiene entradas marcadas (recesión capilar frontal).
Alguien inexperto le haría un High Fade (degradado muy alto). Si hacemos eso, el blanco de la piel se fusionaría con las entradas, haciendo que su frente luzca mucho más grande y exponiendo la falta de cabello.
Decidí hacerle un Mid Fade (Degradado Medio) con caída (Drop). El objetivo era dejar mucho "peso" oscuro en las esquinas superiores (cresta parietal) para enmarcar la cara y disimular las entradas.
Para mis colegas que, como yo, están perfeccionando su técnica, así fue como lo hice:
Primero, bajé el volumen lateral con un peine #1.5. Luego, marqué mi línea del cero a la altura de la sien y la dejé caer ligeramente hacia la nuca (Drop). Esa curva es la que le da una forma masculina al cráneo trasero.
El secreto de un degradado es no crear líneas duras. Pasé la máquina sin peine, pero con la palanca abierta (0.5), un dedo por encima de la guía. Fui cerrando la palanca poco a poco para borrar la línea.
Un tip que aprendí: Siempre uso el movimiento de "cuchareo" (sacando la máquina hacia afuera). Si clavo la máquina recta hacia arriba, haría huecos en el cabello oscuro que necesito para tapar las entradas.
El trabajo no termina al apagar la máquina. Le di un consejo vital a mi cliente para que se peinara en su casa: ¡Prohibido usar Gel fijador!
El gel junta el cabello y expone el cuero cabelludo. Le recomendé que usara cera mate o polvo texturizador, secando el cabello con la toalla hacia adelante. Esto crea volumen y cubre las entradas de forma natural.
Mi amigo se levantó de la silla improvisada súper satisfecho y listo para su compromiso. Ver esa confianza en el cliente es lo que más me gusta de este oficio.

I hadn’t planned on cutting hair today, but in Cuba you always have to be ready. My client asked me for an urgent appointment because he had an important engagement and needed a quick change of look. There was no time to prepare anything, so I brought out my chair, made the most of the natural sunlight and set up my makeshift barbershop.
You might see a bit of a mess or some washing hanging in the background in the photos, but here we make do as we go along. What matters is the technique!
I’m not a barber with 20 years’ experience; I’m a novice with a huge appetite for learning. However, today I want to share with you something that has changed the way I work: Visagism (the study of the face) and how to apply it to solve real problems.
Here is my client. Before turning on the clippers, I always assess the head:
The Face: It has an oval shape.
The Problem: The hair on the sides had grown out too much, giving his head a round shape. But the biggest challenge was that he has a receding hairline (frontal hair loss).
An inexperienced stylist would give him a high fade. If we did that, the white of his skin would blend in with his receding hairline, making his forehead look much larger and exposing the lack of hair.
I decided to give him a mid-fade with a drop. The goal was to leave a lot of dark "weight" in the upper corners (parietal crest) to frame the face and conceal the receding hairline.
For my colleagues who, like me, are perfecting their technique, here’s how I did it:
First, I thinned out the sides with a #1.5 comb. Then, I marked my zero line at the temple and let it drop slightly toward the nape of the neck. That curve is what gives the back of the head a masculine shape.
The secret to a fade is to avoid creating harsh lines. I ran the clipper without a comb, but with the lever open (0.5), about a finger’s width above the guide. I gradually closed the lever to blur the line.
A tip I learned: I always use the "scooping" motion (pulling the clipper outward). If I push the clipper straight up, it would create gaps in the dark hair that I need to cover the receding hairline.
The job isn’t done when you turn off the clipper. I gave my client some vital advice for styling at home: No styling gel!
Gel clumps the hair together and exposes the scalp. I recommended using matte wax or texturizing powder, drying the hair with the towel facing forward. This creates volume and naturally covers the receding hairline.
My friend got up from the makeshift chair super satisfied and ready for his event. Seeing that confidence in the client is what I love most about this trade.
