This insect is a beetle or scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae Latreille) are a family of the order Coleoptera. 5 to 30 million species of beetles are estimated to exist, incredible! Only 350,000 have been described and catalogued by scientists. This makes beetles the order of the animal kingdom with the largest number of species. So when I checked every part of this beetle I got I was sure it is this kind of insect, because it has 6 legs, it also has sharp mandibles (or mouth chewing sections) to be able to consume other insects, plant matter, fungi and decaying plants or animals. To tell the truth I did not know why they come out only at night and not at all times of the year.

Este insecto es un escarabajo o escarabeos (Scarabaeidae Latreille) son una familia del orden de los Coleópteros. Se estima que hay entre 5 y 30 millones de especies de escarabajos, increíble!. Sólo 350.000 han sido descritos y catalogados por los científicos. Esto hace de los escarabajos la orden del reino animal con el mayor número de especies. Por eso al revisar cada parte de este escarabajo que conseguí me aseguré de que es esta clase de insectos, pues tiene 6 patas, también tiene mandíbulas afiladas (o secciones de masticación bucales) para poder consumir otros insectos, materia vegetal, hongos y plantas o animales en descomposición. A decir verdad no sabía por qué salen solo de noche y no en toda época del año.

One of the reasons is that they come out when they are adults, reproductively mature and with their wings developed, they fly alone in search of a mate or food. This specimen that I captured for a few minutes was face up and with its legs shrunken, and without any sign of life. At first I thought he had hurt himself when he fell, but after handling him for a while he became more confident, put out his legs and started to walk. Because of its color we had to place it on a white sheet of paper to appreciate more the designs drawn on its body, and my mother-in-law looked for some green plant leaves for the beetle to walk without problems. The impressive thing about this insect is the various shades of colors not only above its body but below it, which I was able to capture in the photos. By turning it upside down I could also see its legs both shrunken and unfolded ready to walk.

Una de las razones es que salen cuando son adultos, reproductivamente maduros y con sus alas desarrolladas, vuela solo en busca de pareja o alimento. Este ejemplar que capture por algunos minutos estaba boca arriba y con sus patas encogidas, y sin dar muestra de vida. Al principio pensé que al caer se había lastimado, y después de manipularlo un rato entró en confianza, sacó sus patas y empezó a caminar. Debido a su color tuvimos que colocarlo en una hoja de papel blanca para apreciar más el diseños dibujado en su cuerpo, y mi suegra buscó algunas hojas de plantas verdes para que el escarabajo caminara sin problemas. Lo impresionante de este insecto es los diversos tonos de colores no solo por encima de su cuerpo sino por debajo de él, lo cual pude capturar en las fotos. Al ponerlo boca arriba también pude ver sus patas tanto encogidas como desplegadas listas para caminar.

While I had the macro lens close to his head I could see the movement of his jaw and his teeth which was scary, as I can compare it to the head of an "alien" or extraterrestrial from the movies, hahaha. With these teeth he can devour his food without any problem. I could also see its legs very closely and it is noticeable that it has very small hairs or sharp teeth around it. With these it is possible for them to adhere so strongly to the surface they touch that I even placed it on my finger and it was difficult to detach it from me. And in the same way it stuck to the leaves we placed and to the sheet of paper. This property is a wonder of nature.

También pude capturar muy de cerca su cabeza, que es pequeña en comparación con su cuerpo y de grandes ojos negros que sobresalen. Mientras tenía el lente macro cerca de su cabeza pude ver el movimiento de su mandíbula y sus dientes que asustaba, pues lo puedo comparar a la cabeza de un "alien" o extraterrestre de las películas, jajaja. Con estos dientes puede devorar su comida sin ningún problema. También pude ver sus patas muy de cerca y es notorio que tiene a su alrededor pelos o dientes afilados muy pequeños. Con estos es posible para ellos adherirse con tanta fuerza a la superficie que tocan que hasta lo coloqué en mi dedo y fue difícil despegarlo de mí. Y de esa misma manera se pegaba a las hojitas que colocamos y a la hoja de papel. Está propiedad es una maravilla de la naturaleza.

This is a fact that I learned about these incredible insects, they take quite a long time to develop, hahaha, hence the rarity of their species that makes them unique. The beetles have wings that have 2 hard covers, in this specimen that I show you you can clearly see the division with a black line that demarcates its wings, closed. While its wings are folded, it looks like a hard shell, but when it unfolds them to fly, you can see how well designed they are. In this beetle you can see the very light beige base, with black dots that form vertical lines that cross its entire body or what are its wings above.

Sabían que estos escarabajos tienen metamorfosis completa como las mariposas (huevo, larva y pupa) antes de transformarse en adulto?... Sí, este es su desarrollo natural. Y que tiempo les lleva completar este proceso? Pues por increíble que parezca, tarda generalmente un año y hasta 3 años en las especies de escarabajos más grandes, con las condiciones apropiadas para lograrlo. Este es un dato que aprendí de estos increíbles insectos, tardan bastante en desarrollarse no?, Jajaja, de allì la rareza de su especie que los hace únicos. Los escarabajos tienen alas que cuentan con 2 cubiertas duras, es este ejemplar que les muestro se ve claramente la división con una línea negra que demarca sus alas, cerradas. Mientras sus alas están recogidas le da un aspecto de caparazón duro, pero cuando las despliega para volar se ve lo bien diseñadas que están. En este escarabajo se ve la base de color beige muy clara, con puntitos negros que forman líneas verticales que atraviesan todo su cuerpo o lo que son sus alas por encima.

There are several types of these insects, giants, others small, some harmless to humans and others not so much, but each kind with its specific and unique characteristics.

Otra curiosidad de estos insectos es que pasan la mayor parte de su vida bajo el suelo donde ocurre su metamorfosis. Con razón tratas de verlos en otro momento y es difícil conseguirlos, impresionante no?... Son más dependientes del suelo de lo que parece, porque es abajo donde muchas especies pasan la mayor parte de su vida y no solo como adultos sino como larvas o pupas en diferentes fases de la metamorfosis. Después que las hembras ponen sus huevos en el suelo o en troncos en descomposición, de cada huevo emerge una larva, que muda tres veces hasta volverse pupa y finalmente se transforma en adulto. De allí su transformación que llega al resultado final en la variedad de escarabajos que hay, y por cierto hay muchas. Hay varios tipos de estos insectos, gigantes, otros pequeños, algunos inofensivos al ser humano y otros no tanto, pero cada clase con sus características específicas y únicas.

Luego de un rato de esta sesión de fotos, el escarabajo echó a volar. Lo capturamos de nuevo porque él mismo cayó patas arriba y no podía levantarse.
