The reason I mention "nightwatchman" is due to the fact, that these beetle came out of nowhere post the sunset, when we switch on the lights. The browny insects with hard body surface is one if the common flying beetle that we get to see around our home during nights.
These are called the May Beetle, (named after the months in which they are found numerous ) looked very creepy and with slow movement, they use to fly with a buzzing sound. As like a helicopter is flying inside your room. Last night, I noticed the buzzing sound, only to find beetle sitting on my mosquito net. Quickly I took out my mobile to snap few of these night insects.
May beetles or “Junebugs” are beetles in the family Scarabaeidae.
These beetles are clumsy walkers and fliers. They are usually brownish and are attracted to lights at night. They usually have plain body with no spots or patterns on their body. They are nocturnal and are attracted to lights at night. That is reason calling them Nightwatchman is not wrong.
May beetles belong to a large family of beetles called scarabs. As with other scarabs, they are oval, stout, and have clubbed antennae with segments that can press tightly together or can be fanned open like a feather.
As the beetle is playing on.my finger, here are few of the snaps.
Interestingly, there are more than 400 species of these kind of beetle. It's hard to distinguish among them. An adult "May Beetle" has a life cycle of 3-4 years and they rely mostly of green leafes. They do damages the plants.
Well they are very common found hitting on your window glass and flying around with buzzing sound. They just don't harm humans, but better to remain safe from these insects. Hope you enjoyed the short read on these insects.
