Jimmy G cracks my top twenty! I could have put Jimmy higher on this list but if I really think about it, number twenty is a pretty perfect ranking I believe.
I honestly would understand if someone would want to rank Jimmy significantly higher or even lower. In some ways I like what Jimmy brings to the table. He is a super game manager, can deliver from the pocket at a nice pro level. He won't win you or lose you games. Can be both surprisingly clutch and also look horrible. He's had several WTF moments in his career as well.
Jimmy G is like seventy percent Eli Manning, and thirty percent Ryan Fitzpatrick.
His career has been insanely mysterious honestly. He was a typical random discovery by Bill Belichick in 2014, then he signed a random big contract with the Niners in 2018, then three games into that season he tears his ACL and misses the whole season.
In 2019 he leads the Niners to a great season where they almost win the Super Bowl.
In 2020 he's basically injured all season, only playing six games.
In 2021 he helps the Niners scratch and claw their way to the NFC Championship Game.
2022 is super bonkers too because he wasn't supposed to be the starter or even on the 49ers at all, then he was the backup, then he ends up playing due to injury, plays well, then gets injured AGAIN.
Who knows what Jimmy G's career would look like if he could actually stay healthy. All in all Jimmy G is simply a decent pocket passing QB.
Now in 2023 Jimmy G finds himself on the Raiders and I think that it's probably a great fit for both parties. The Raiders let go of Derek Carr, and while Jimmy G is kind of just a lateral move I believe it's good for the Raiders to have a fresh start at QB.
I also think it's good for Jimmy G to get a fresh start. Jimmy dealt with frankly an insane amount of critique in San Fran. I mean, never being able to stay healthy would be disappointing for fans, but you can't like actually be mad at Jimmy for that. When Jimmy was on the field the dude won games. Jimmy had a 38-17 record as the starting QB for the Niners. 4-2 in the playoffs.
The Raiders need a guy that can deliver the ball and just be a decent, humble leader, and Jimmy seems like a good fit. He rejoins Josh McDaniels, the two were in New England together.
Jimmy G is a mysterious figure in the league, leave comments where you rank him!
