Dalvin Cook has been one of the most consistent running backs in the NFL over the past four seasons. I've always been a big fan of his game. He's quick, fast, versatile and durable. I'm very curious about how the Vikings offense will look without Dalvin going forward.
For the past decade or so many running backs in the NFL are having issues getting paid an adequate amount for how many things running backs are asked to do on the field. Running back is perhaps the most painful position on the field and the position is a valuable part of an offense. The problem is though, a majority of backs have a relatively short NFL lifespan and a common narrative is that running backs are more replaceable than other offensive positions. It's a very interesting, odd issue I guess.
I personally believe running backs are freaking awesome. I believe they should get paid better. Also, I believe the value in finding a high level, durable running back is super high. Even in this so called passing league. Frank Gore was a recent, prime example that running backs can last and play at a high level. Hopefully other backs like Cook, maybe Derrick Henry and other backs on this list can start to change the narrative. Maybe rookie contracts for running backs should be shorter?
I'm curious to see how the Vikings will try to replace 1,600 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns a season as Dalvin Cook provided on average the past four years.
Another spooky narrative about backs is the dreaded 30 years old marker. It's believed that running backs fall off a cliff at 30. I don't believe that's as true as everyone thinks, and Dalvin is only 28.
I hope Dalvin has a strong season in 2023. He is a great, well rounded back and since 2018 he's even averaged 48 receptions a season. He still has a ton of value in my opinion.
