This is my new series covering the World Cup. I will pick talking points from each gameday to write about. I will most likely write one or two daily posts until the final. Today, I will be talking about the following:
Croatia outpens Japan
Brazil making up goals
Croatia outpens Japan
Japan has been one of this World Cup's best revelations along with Morocco. It's not about those teams getting the winning results so far, but about how they simply deserved to get so far. Japan's win over Spain and Germany showed us a team focused on results and has enough talents to get those results.
On the other hand, Croatia is Croatia. They know how to get a result when they need it. They saw what Japan did against Spain and Germany so they entered the game with enough respect for the Asian side to avoid being added to the list of surprises. Having Modric in your midfield is just such a blessing because the midfielder knows how to move the ball around.
There isn't much to say about this match as it served as a summary of how both teams performed so far with Japan's efficiency upfront utilized and Croatia's experience being put to good use to get the result they need to get through. It was an extremely tactical match from start to finish, so the ending of it was appropriate as no team was better than the other.
Brazil improvised goals
I think I finally found out why the current version of Brazil is so enjoyable to watch. Tete knows how talented and creative his players are up front, therefore, he is leaving all the choices for them to make. Pep Guardiola would never!
When you look at player's movement, you see that Brazil's formation was 4-2-3-1 which quickly turns into a 3 at the back variation, be it 3-5-2, 3-2-5, 3-4-3, or whatever because the shape doesn't matter or is never formed as any player north of Casimiro has freedom of movement. The only tactical thought was Danilo becoming a second pivot to Casimiro.
Tete knows the kind of players he has, and he knows that he only needs to work hard in tracking back and that is all as Tete is aware that keeping a clean sheet or a protected net on his side is all he needs to do with players up front like the one he has at his disposal.
Tactically, South Korea was formatted in a way that should stop Brazil, or at least prevent them from scoring so many goals so early. But, once you watch Raphinha dribbles past Korea's left wide midfielder and then again past the centre midfielder, you realize that Brazil simply has too many talents up front to need any tactics. Whether Neymar, Vinicius, Raphinha, or even Richarlison and Martinelli, Tete is aware that he only needs to keep them focused.
Tactically speaking, Brazil is on the lower end when it comes to tactics. But, with quality, technique, skills, and creativity, Brazil is amongst the best, if not the best.
When you watch most of Brazil's goals this tournament you realize how little they were as a result of tactics and the match against South Korea is a prime example of this.
Brazil improvised most of their plays upfront. Such improvisational plays put a lot of pressure on the opponent's defence as it doesn't not only puts their defensive tactics under test but also their individual quality. So, yes, your right-back can mark Vinicius, your left-back can mark Raphinha, and your centre-backs can mark Richarlison and Neymar, but can they take the ball from those players? And if they can, how many times?
Whoever is going to defeat Brazil will need to find a way how to turn that point of strength into a weakness, and I have no clue who could do that and how they could do that.
Brazil is a team that knows how to attack, but what's scary, is that it is the only one that knows how it can attack as it comes at the spur of the moment by players who are simply way too creative on the ball to be in one team in a fair game. But, this is not a fair game, it's football.
On the other hand, group H as a whole wasn't an impressive group, aside from Portugal of course. So, I am not surprised by this result, nor do I believe any of the teams that didn't qualify would have done better.
