That 's right, I am still going to talk about basketball even though the biggest sporting event of the weekend was the Super Bowl. Okay, twist my arm, I will talk about the Super Bowl a little bit.
Being honest, I didn't watch the full game. As is usually the case, I went to bed after the halftime show. Most of my friends aren't really into sports that much, so having a big Super Bowl party fizzled out a long time ago.
After watching Tampa Bay's defense two weekends ago against Green Bay, in Green Bay, I was fairly confident that Tampa Bay could secure the win. Confident enough that I actually put some money on the Bucs to win. Sure, it was only $3 and it netted me a whopping total of $7, but hey, a win is a win!
Alright, so onto basketball.
Unranked Miami came close, but they couldn't quite beat #16 Virginia in overtime. This one stung a little because I had a $1 bet on Miami to pull out the upset. Knowing how close it actually was makes it even worse!
#18 Missouri upset #10 Alabama and that one in fact won me a little bit of money. So let's call it a wash so far.
#19 Wisconsin let me down by allowing #12 Illinois to score all over them. It was a pretty ugly game and I lost another dollar there.
I was going to put money on the Texas/Oklahoma State game but I didn't. I wish now that I had. Going into two overtimes, the unranked Cowboys handed the #6 Longhorns a pretty bad loss. I didn't watch the game, so I can only guess they just ran out of steam.
The final upset of Saturday came from USC taking down #21 UCLA in what looks to have been a very defensive game. That final score of 48 to 66 feels more like a high school score.
My Michigan State Spartans played Nebraska on Saturday and finally showed some signs of life. They came away with the win, but that isn't saying much since they are both right down at the very bottom of the Big Ten standings. The game was still very sloppy on the part of MSU and I think it is going to be a stretch to see them playing much past the middle of March.
Gonzaga and Baylor are playing the game again where they get to cancel or postpone most of their games but still keep their #1 and #2 rankings. I have no doubt if they were playing they would probably still retain their ranks, but I think you should at least have to earn it.
Indiana won me back my money on Sunday with a win over #8 Iowa. I had a good feeling about that one. Iowa has been struggling down the stretch and are not looking nearly as strong as they did at the beginning of the season.
Finally, unranked Valparaiso handed #25 Drake an upset. Probably not too surprising on that one...
So there you go. Tune in at the end of the week for the latest recap on college hoops. With football behind us, we are in the home stretch now. Before you now it Baseball will be starting back up!
