Do you realize that there were actually over 50 division 1 basketball games played yesterday. If you look at most of the score pages, you will probably only see the scores for maybe five games. That's because the score pages usually only show the top 25 ranked teams.
If you have been following me or college basketball at all this season, I think it is very obvious that those unranked teams shouldn't be taken for granted. We have seen countless times those underdogs taking down a ranked opponent.
That outcome wasn't the case for any of the top 25 teams that played last night, but there were a couple of games between unranked teams that I think should be taken note of.
The first one is Texas A&M Corpus Christi taking down Stephen F. Austin by one point (73-73). These two teams may not be household names, but if you are familiar with the NCAA tournament, you have no doubt heard them. SFA has been to the tournament five times in their history and A&M-CC has been to the tournament once. It should be noted that A&M has only had a basketball program at this campus for twenty years. That is pretty impressive. I wouldn't be surprised to see either one of these teams win out their conference and end up in the tournament.
Big 10
The other two games I want to focus on took place in the Big 10. Since I live in a Big 10 state, it is only natural that I am going to focus on those teams...
Illinois took down Wisconsin by one point in a 71 to 70 win. Since Illinois is currently just short of being in a tie for third place in the conference, I think this really speaks to the possibility that Wisconsin will finish higher than where it currently sits in a six way tie for fourth place. There has been a lot of back and forth inside the Big 10 this year and I wouldn't be surprised at the end of the season if we don't see Wisconsin finish closer to the top.
The Northwestern and Indiana game should also be mentioned. Indiana won by a score of 66 to 62. The fact that the team who is last in the Big 10 with Zero wins could only lose to one of those tied for fourth teams by four points is pretty impressive. I don't expect the Wildcats to finish very high or make it to the tournament, but they could be a spoiler for one of the other teams that are in the race. Hopefully it isn't my Spartans.
I could easily see 9 of the 12 Big 10 teams (don't ask) making it to the tournament this year. Right now it doesn't look like Nebraska would be one of them (sorry ), but who knows because also right now Michigan and Ohio State have a worse record than them in the Big 10 and they are ranked in the top 25.
Michigan faces off tonight against Minnesota, so check back tomorrow for a write up on that game!
