It was a pretty full weekend for NCAA sports. There were bowl games and basketball games galore. Let's start with basketball as that was far more interesting that most of the bowl games.
Hands down, the best game of the weekend was probably the Louisville vs. Kentucky game. There is still a lot of basketball to watch until March, but this game may stand up against all of them as the best game I watch all season.
This game was so close and both teams seriously played their hearts out. I don't think many people that tuned in for this game were anywhere but on the edge of their seat. Especially in the last 5 minutes of regulation and into overtime.
There weren't any other notable games on Saturday.
In my opinion, the biggest games on Sunday were the West Virginia/Ohio State game and the Western Michigan/Michigan State game.
The former because it was a pretty big upset with #22 WVA beating #2 OSU by a generous 8 points. My brother in law who lives outside of Columbus was just talking about how good the Ohio State team is this year. I think a lot of teams have a good deal of work to do over the next two months. If not, it could be a free for all tournament!
Michigan State struggled a little early with their usual turnovers and sloppy play, but they were able to pull things together about midway through the first half and coast along to the win over Western Michigan. This game should have been fairly easy for them and apparently it was despite starting point guard Cassius Winston sitting it out.
No other notable games or outcomes. There are five games tonight with the biggest one being Gonzaga (who is now #1) playing a possibly irrelevant team from Detroit. The Xavier/Villanova could be worth tuning in for though.
The Pinstripe bowl was actually a lot closer than I wanted it to be, but somehow Michigan State was able to come out with the win. It wasn't their best showing, but quite honestly few games this season have been. I am excited about the idea of a new starting quarterback now that Lewerke is gone and hopefully they can pick up some fresh talent in the off-season.
Looking at the scores, Texas A&M over Oklahoma State was a notable upset in the Texas Bowl. LSU thrashed Oklahoma to make it to the College Football Championship and in a shocking performance, Ohio State fell to Clemson. This game was a real surprise for me and I can't help but think a questionable targeting call by the officials in Clemsons favor wasn't one of the deciding factors.
There are four pretty insignificant bowl games on today. Given the choice, I will probably watch basketball instead.
