I was honestly expecting this match to be a huge win for Bayern with a final result looking like 4-1 or 5-1 but that was nowhere near close to what actually happened. Bayern wasn't only unable to beat Sevilla in the first 90 minutes, but they also won just by 1 goal and they could very well have ended up losing the match.
It is not that Bayern's players are out of shape, they scored 8 goals in their previous match for the German league, so there are no doubts they are in shape. In fact, they were better than Sevilla and had more opportunities to score goals but they simply either missed them or their goals got disallowed by the referee. In total, they had 2 disallowed goals, one from Lewandowski after an amazing play with Muller in front of Sevilla's goalkeeper, and another one from Sane after a few messy bounces in the penalty area.
The lack of more goals from Bayern is entirely thanks to Sevilla's defensive and pressing system. Sevilla didn't try to take the ball from Bayern in the second half of the match, the whole team was defending and waiting for an opportunity to do a quick counterattack, and that was what happened in the 87-minute mark.
En-Nesiry, one of Sevilla's strikers, was alone in front of Bayern's goalkeeper, Neuer, he had enough time and space to do a proper shot but Neuer spectacularly guessed the direction of the shot, touched the ball, and sent it out of the pitch. That was the opportunity Sevilla had to win the final and they weren't able to beat Neuer, who by the way, is one of the 3 UEFA candidates to be awarded as the best player of last season. The winner will probably be Lewandowski but it is a great accomplishment for a goalkeeper to be included in that exclusive list.
Soon after En-Nesyri's miss, the 90 minutes ended and the match was officially entering extra time and if one miss is bad enough, 2 are just horrible to the confidence of a striker and even to the whole team. En-Nesyri had a new opportunity at the beginning of the extra time and Neuer again stops the balls and then it hits the post. Bayern was clearly focused only on attacking and that almost cost them the final.
Once a match enters extra time the players are all extremely tired and the movements all get slower. It is no surprise for Bayern's second goal to be scored by a player who began the match on the bench. It was a good header from Javi Martinez after the goalkeeper left the ball in the hair after stopping an Alaba's shot.
Bayern clearly deserved to win, but Sevilla has proved once again that they can compete against elite teams. To put the result into perspective, in August this Bayern scored 8 goals against Barcelona in the Champions League and a week ago they scored 8 goals again, this time against Schalke in the German League. Today, against Sevilla, they were unable to score 2 goals in the first 90 minutes and were only able to score 2 goals in 120 minutes. Sevilla is a solid team and despite not winning the trophy, the final result speaks wonders about them and their competitive nature.
Next week we will see Bayern on another final, this time it will be the German Supercup against Borussia Dortmund and it is very clear which one is the favorite to win. As fas as I know, Bayern has never won all 6 trophies (national league, national cup, champions league, uefa supercup, national supercup and club world cup) on a natural year so they are not only playing just for the trophies but also for an unprecedented record for this team.
