Despite this lack of trophies, these are 2 countries that always manage to have good players that compete at the highest level in top European clubs. During the group stage, Belgium had it much easier than Portugal which is why they managed to finish in the first position. Belgium's rivals in the group stage were Finland, Denmark, and Russia. Neither of these 3 teams can be considered an important candidate for the trophy.
Portugal, on the other hand, was in the most challenging group of the entire tournament. Their rivals were France, Germany, and Hungary which was the weakest team and the one that finished in the last position. Portugal was able to classify for the next round by achieving the third position.
Usually, when a team that finishes in the first position plays against a team that finishes in the third position, the first team is the favorite to win the match. However, between Belgium and Portugal, it was hard to say which one had more chances of winning. I thought the match was going to be very even and I also thought Portugal had some slight edge thanks to the presence of CR7, who has been the best player of the tournament during the group stage.
How was the match?
The match started with Belgium controlling the ball in the first few minutes and Portugal waiting for a good opportunity to counter-attack. That's how they scored their first goal against Germany. Belgium has some excellent attacking players such as Eden Hazard, Lukaku who is a great striker, and De Bruyne.
Belgium was a bit better than Portugal and was able to create organic attacking plays that allowed them to attempt some shots but with zero effectiveness so far. Seeing Pepe defending against Lukaku was surprising. Usually, Lukaku throws to the ground any defensive player that attempts to stop him because the guy is huge but Pepe isn't scared to try to stop him and resist his physical strength.
The first important save by Courtois came after a free-kick by CR7 around the 24-minute mark. He decided to shot the ball to the same side where Courtois was standing in an attempt to surprise him but Courtois is too good and was able to stop the shot. Courtois is among the best goalkeepers in the world and he is extremely tall too, so scoring free-kick goals against him is very difficult.
Up to that moment, Belgium was proving to be the better team with more capabilities to generate attacking plays. The match was even, but Belgium was slightly better, it was more organized and with a better idea about how to hurt their rival. Portugal wasn't as confident although both teams were very playing very conservatively which resulted in not many goal attempts as a whole.
The first goal of the match came towards the end of the first half in a Belgian counterattack. The play was meant to be finished by Lukaku with a shot but he loses the ball, only for his teammate to immediately recover it. Thorgan Hazard then receives the ball just outside the penalty box, and with a regular shot, he sends the ball inside the net. The shot wasn't particularly good, and the Portuguese goalkeeper could have made a better job trying to stop the ball, he almost stopped it but missed it by a few centimeters.
The goal scorer, Thorgan Hazard, plays as a midfielder either on the left side of the pitch or in the middle. He is the younger brother of the popular player Eden Hazard, who was also present on the pitch during this match. The presence of these 2 brothers is why I need to mention the complete name every time I want to talk about either of them.
Given the fact the match was very even, this goal at the end of the first half was of huge help for Belgium. It allowed them to not just start the second half with the assurance of having a 1 goal advantage, but it also gave them a very useful emotional impulse during the important half break.
When the second half started De Bruyne was forced to immediately leave the pitch because he suffered an injury. This player is probably the best one of the team and losing him was a big deal but his performance so far wasn't very great so the team didn't really feel his absence.
In the second half, Portugal was much more active and their attacks were getting more intense. Their frustration was getting palpable and what's worse for them is that every time they had an opportunity for a good shot, it always was either stopped by a defensive player or it was a bad shot that went nowhere near the goal net. Portugal did some substitutions and this helped in creating more attacking plays but didn't help with their effectiveness.
As the match got more and more intense, the players began to commit more faults, and if you know Pepe then it shouldn't be surprising to know he did a strong foul against Lukaku that caused a small fight between the 2 teams. It was solved by a yellow card and the match continued as normal. This foul by Pepe proved once again the high level of frustration Portugal was going through. They were attacking but were unable to tie the match no matter how hard they tried.
The best opportunity to score a goal for Portugal came after a corner kick. The defensive player Ruben Dias was able to make a goal attempt with a good header but unluckily for him the ball went straight to where the goalkeeper was standing, and he stopped it. That header could have easily been a goal but Portugal wasn't having a good day.
Minutes later, another good goal attempt by Portugal happened after a shot by Guerreiro from the border of the penalty box hits the post. Portugal was overwhelming Belgium with their good momentum but the goal never came.
The match ended with Portugal crossing the ball into the area looking for a good header, and Belgium almost scoring their second goal thanks to a counterattack with Lukaku and Carrasco. It was a good match, although I was expecting more goals and more quality in the attacking plays. But I enjoyed watching it.
Belgium achieved an important win although I think a tie or even a Portuguese victory would have been fairer. Belgium was more effective with their goal attempts but overall, Portugal had a greater effort and did many more shots, the majority of those weren't on target though.
This was a disappointing match for CR7 because his shots could have been much better. He was the best player during the group stage but this time he wasn't good enough to even score 1 goal or do 1 single assist. Portugal was the winner of the previous Euro and leaving now during the round of 16 must feel like a huge failure for them.
On the Belgian side, I really liked Lukaku, Courtois, and both Hazards' performances. Lukaku is certainly in great shape and seeing this striker playing against the Italian defense in the next match will be intense for sure. Eden Hazard finished the match with a small injury but hopefully, he can be present in their next match. He is a very important player for Belgium and is a world-class talent for sure.
What's next?
Later today, I plan to watch the match between Spain and Croatia and I might also watch the one between France and Switzerland although I am not sure about that one.
The tournament has finally reached its exciting phase where teams are eliminated if they lose and better matches are surely waiting in the next round. The team with the most chances of winning later today in my opinion are Spain and France.

Durante la fase de grupos, Bélgica lo tuvo mucho más fácil que Portugal por lo que logró terminar en la primera posición. Portugal, por otro lado, estuvo en el grupo más complicado de todo el torneo. Sus rivales fueron Francia, Alemania y Hungría que fue el equipo más débil y el que terminó en la última posición. Portugal pudo clasificar para la siguiente ronda al lograr la tercera posición.
Por lo general, cuando un equipo que termina en la primera posición juega contra un equipo que termina en la tercera posición, el primer equipo es el favorito para ganar el partido. Sin embargo, entre Bélgica y Portugal, era difícil decir cuál tenía más posibilidades de ganar. Pensé que el partido iba a ser muy igualado y también pensé que Portugal tenía una ligera ventaja gracias a la presencia de CR7, que ha sido el mejor jugador del torneo durante la fase de grupos.

Ver a Pepe defendiéndose de Lukaku fue sorprendente. La primera parada importante de Courtois llegó después de un tiro libre de CR7 en el minuto 24. Decidió disparar el balón al mismo lado donde estaba Courtois para intentar sorprenderlo, pero Courtois es demasiado bueno y pudo detener el tiro. Courtois se encuentra entre los mejores porteros del mundo y también es extremadamente alto, por lo que marcar goles de falta contra él es muy difícil.
Hasta ese momento, Bélgica estaba demostrando ser el mejor equipo con más capacidades para generar jugadas de ataque. El partido estuvo parejo, pero Bélgica fue un poco mejor, estuvo más organizado y con una mejor idea de cómo lastimar a su rival. Portugal no tenía tanta confianza, aunque ambos equipos jugaban de manera muy conservadora, lo que resultó en pocos intentos de gol en total.
El primer gol del partido llegó hacia el final de la primera parte en un contraataque belga. La jugada estaba destinada a ser terminada por Lukaku con un tiro, pero pierde el balón, solo para que su compañero de equipo lo recupere de inmediato. El goleador, Thorgan Hazard, juega como mediocampista en el lado izquierdo del campo o en el medio. Es el hermano menor del popular jugador Eden Hazard, quien también estuvo presente en el terreno de juego durante este partido. La presencia de estos 2 hermanos es la razón por la que necesito mencionar el nombre completo cada vez que quiero hablar de alguno de ellos.
Dado que el partido estuvo muy igualado, este gol al final de la primera parte fue de gran ayuda para Bélgica. Les permitió no solo comenzar la segunda parte con la seguridad de tener 1 gol de ventaja, sino que también les dio un impulso emocional muy útil durante el descanso.
Cuando comenzó la segunda parte, De Bruyne se vio obligado a abandonar inmediatamente el terreno de juego porque sufrió una lesión. Este jugador es probablemente el mejor del equipo y perderlo fue un gran problema, pero su desempeño hasta ahora no era muy bueno, por lo que el equipo realmente no sintió mucho su ausencia.

Se solucionó con tarjeta amarilla y el partido continuó con normalidad. Esta falta de Pepe demostró una vez más el alto nivel de frustración que atravesaba Portugal. Atacaban pero no pudieron empatar el partido por mucho que lo intentaran.
La mejor oportunidad de marcar un gol para Portugal llegó tras un saque de esquina. El defensor Rubén Dias supo hacer un intento de gol con un buen cabezazo pero, por desgracia para él, el balón se fue directo a donde estaba parado el portero y lo detuvo. Ese cabezazo fácilmente podría haber sido un gol, pero Portugal no estaba teniendo un buen día.
Minutos después, se produjo otro buen intento de gol de Portugal tras un disparo de Guerreiro desde el borde del área que pegó en el poste. Portugal abrumaba a Bélgica con su buen momento, pero el gol nunca llegó.
El partido terminó con Portugal cruzando el balón al área buscando un buen cabezazo, y Bélgica casi anotando su segundo gol gracias a un contragolpe con Lukaku y Carrasco. Fue un buen partido, aunque esperaba más goles y más calidad en las jugadas de ataque. Pero disfruté viéndolo.
Bélgica logró una victoria importante, aunque creo que un empate o incluso una victoria portuguesa hubiera sido más justo. Bélgica fue más efectiva con sus intentos de gol, pero en general, Portugal hizo un mayor esfuerzo e hizo muchos más tiros, aunque la mayoría de ellos no fueron buenos.
Este fue un partido decepcionante para CR7 porque sus tiros podrían haber sido mucho mejores. Fue el mejor jugador durante la fase de grupos, pero esta vez no fue lo suficientemente bueno como para marcar un gol o dar una sola asistencia. Portugal fue el ganador de la Eurocopa anterior y retirarse ahora durante los octavos de final debe sentirse como un gran fracaso para ellos.
En el lado belga, me gustaron mucho las actuaciones de Lukaku, Courtois y ambos Hazards. Sin duda, Lukaku está en muy buena forma y ver a este delantero jugar contra la defensa italiana en el próximo partido será muy intenso. Eden Hazard terminó el partido con una pequeña lesión pero, con suerte, podrá estar presente en su próximo partido. Es un jugador muy importante para Bélgica y seguro que es un talento de clase mundial.
¿Qué sigue?
Hoy más tarde, planeo ver el partido entre España y Croacia y también podría ver el partido entre Francia y Suiza, aunque no estoy seguro que pueda verlo.
El torneo finalmente ha llegado a su fase emocionante donde los equipos son eliminados si pierden y seguramente los mejores partidos esperan en la próxima ronda. En mi opinión, el equipo con más posibilidades de ganar más tarde hoy es España y Francia.
