Los checos, siempre fuertes competidores, igualaron a dos con Dinamarca durante los noventa minutos y el tiempo extra, sin embargo, en los penales mostraron su tradicional eficiencia y dejaron a la “dinamita roja” de Eriksen y compañía, sin mundial.

En estos sufridos diez juegos el equipo sueco apenas anotó cinco goles, para un paupérrimo promedio de 0.50 por encuentro (en seis de estos partidos ni siquiera marcó un gol), mientras que recibían 17 goles en contra, para un elevado 1.7 por partido (solamente en una ocasión lograron mantener su puerta en cero)
La destitución oportuna del danés Tomasson, y la llegada de un técnico ingles experimentado como Grahan Potter, le dio a Suecia el oxígeno suficiente para encarar los partidos decisivos y vencer en ambos a rivales complicados como son Ucrania y Polonia. En total, los vikingos marcaron 6 veces en estos dos encuentros con un promedio excelente de tres goles a favor por partido, frente a 1,5 en contra. Gyokeres con sus tres goles frente a los ucranianos, y el gol decisivo al minuto 88 contra Polonia, resultó el líder y héroe de una selección, que si bien todavía puede mejorar mucho más en su nivel de juego, por lo menos, ya está clasificada para el venidero mundial y una vez allí, todos comienzan parejos.
