The major European football league competitions will hold an online meeting, on Friday, to discuss plans by the European Union (UEFA) to change the format of the Champions League, with major changes to the group stage.
UEFA is conducting consultations with clubs and league leagues on how to make the group stage more exciting, and the European Union prefers the option of increasing the number of matches for this round.
The talks focused on canceling the group stage in its current form, as there are currently eight groups each consisting of four teams, each team facing three competitors at home and outside it.
The current format leads to matches whose outcome becomes a mere achievement, as the first two teams in each group qualify, perhaps before one or two matches after the end of the group stage.
The European Union is considering changing this formula and relying on another in which 32 teams play with 10 different competitors.
This will allow for more matches, and UEFA hopes to generate more revenue through this formula, and reach a larger fan base.
