Hi Everyone! Hope you are having a great day. I recently joined the chess Coaching team to prepare the athletes for the Next Nigerian University Games coming up this year. A visit to the sport complex today, And I remember my glory days in the university and how it was made possible and most importantly Why University Of Porthacourt Remains Unbeaten in Nigeria & West Africa Since 2003!
It's been two years since i graduated from the University of Porthacourt, I spent four years studying and playing Chess for my beloved university. Today, before the chess training, I went around taking some pictures of the sports Complex which I'd like to show and most importantly tell you some of the reasons why they have achieved this great feat

GREAT SPORTING FACILITIES
As i entered the sporting area today, It reminds me why the university is nicknamed UNISPORTS!. The university boasts of one the best track and field available in any west African university.
The university athletes have full access any time and any day to the track which is vital to their training. To be a very good athlete, you have to train daily, maybe even twice a day! The university offers this, Even the National athletes sometimes come to use this facility to prepare for the Olympics. With this and many more sporting facilities, it is no surprise how they have managed to win consistently since 2003!
As you can see from the Image above, it is crystal clear how dominant they have been.
EARLY PREPARATIONS
I remember in 2016 when i got admission into the university, i knew already that i would play chess for the school the next year 2017, but as it was a year and 4 months time, I felt it was too early to train. I would always say "I can get in shape anytime." The thing about the university is, they are strict with athletes.
My first night in the university sports hostel was interrupted by a loud noise and knock ushering everyone to come down for a meeting.
It was a meeting at midnight! To welcome the new students and inform us that by 6am everyone should be on the track for early morning jogging!
That's was 3am already.... We did that everyday of the week and i later realized that was the drill in there. Training continues as long as you are an athlete of the school... it didn't matter if all I did was sit on the board and play CHESS

SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ATHLETES
Being an athlete in the university offers you some special treatment as you would be known and respected as an ambassador of the school.
During occasions were the school needs representations, Sports men and women were chosen. They are often presented with different attires as they attend this meetings.
This has attracted many top athletes in the country who wants to go to school or further their education to think of uniport as a worthy option.
It is important to note that inasmuch the school provides all this things, they do not interfere with the athletes education and often times remind them to take their education as serious as their sports.
REWARDING EXCELLENCE
In my four years spent in the university, I participated in two events. The Nigerian university games in 2017 & the west Africa university games in 2018 and I achieved two bronze medals & one Gold medal respectively. I can say proudly that i was rewarded for every medal i won for the school and i was well taken care off during the competitions.
The university spends far more than the rest to keep themselves in shape and in good health and are always greatly rewarded with the top position.

In Conclusion...
With the Nigerian University games coming up soon, I can't see any university in Nigeria beating Uniport this time.
While am at helping the chess team get better, I was able to finalise a hive return for the Female National chess champion 
She would be returning to #Hivechess soon which makes me so excited.
