Before the European Championship many of us wrote a lot about Group F. This was the death group in which Germany, France, Portugal, and Hungary would be playing against one another. Nobody gave Hungary much chance, but I guess they proved themselves to be a worthy opponent during the group stage.
But, after the three matches of the group stage were finished, the three big candidates, France, Germany, and Portugal made it to the knockout stage.
Nobody expected this...
But, then something happened that I don't believe anyone would have expected at all. First, Portugal lost against Belgium. To be honest, I had a feeling that might happen, and I am kind of happy it did. So, this was the least surprising result to me.
Then came the major suprise... when Switzerland managed to beat France. That was a giant surprise. I didn't give Switzerland much chance at all, but I guess that match proved the importance of unity and a fighting spirit, way more than the importance of having world stars in a team.
France had the strongest squad in the entire tournament, and so, I did expect them to possibly win the entire thing. But, Switzerland wanted it differently... so even though France had a stronger team, Switzerland deserved the victory.
Yesterday, Germany played against England. This was a match in which I would have believed that anything could happen. England normally starts to mess things up in the knockout stage, so why not this time as well? Germany has been having their ups and downs, but normally they still fight well in such situations.
But, England wanted it to be different, and with Prince William and David Beckham cheering from them at Wembley, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling scored one goal each and England won 2-0.
Bye bye Group F
And that was it... bye bye to Group F. Three of the biggest favorites ahead of the tournament has been eliminated.
Maybe we would have been better off if Hungary had made it to the knockout stage instead? What do you think?
Who will win the Euros now?
