Hello friends, How are you doing today? Learning how to drive may be very simple for some people and maybe very hard for some.
My immediate elder brother did not pass through driving school before he started driving. There was no one that taught him how to drive a car; Though, he was paying attention to our eldest brother whenever they traveled together. One day When our eldest left his car key and went out, my brother took the car key and drove the car out. That was how he started driving the car out unknowingly to him. After a few months, he had already mastered driving skills; That was how he learned how to drive a car.
Learning how to drive was a trauma for me. After a year I passed out in secondary school, that was when I was 18 years old because I passed out of secondary school at 17. My brother called me, “Chris, you need to learn how to drive in case I want to send you to get something."
The first time I entered the car, the moment I sat on the driver's seat, sweat was all over my body. I haven't started the car when I was sweating like someone that runs 100m.
He taught me how to ignite, brake, clutch, accelerator, starring and hand brake.
He did not give me the car to drive, he drove the car himself and told me to pay attention whereas I have been sitting beside him for a long time.
He said, “Chris, watch me and tell me the road signs he observed."
When we got home, "write all the road signs and show me”, I went to the internet and read about the road signs. By the time he was asking me questions about the road signs, I answered all of them.
After weeks, he took me to the field close to our house; He handed over the car to me and seated behind me. He was teaching me stage by stage but fear gripped my heart and I couldn't learn anything. After several trials, I couldn't perfect the basic skills.
He registered me to Driving school, I spent 3 months learning how to drive. It was very easy for me because someone else taught me.
Facing the reality of Driving after Driving School
After my driving school, It was tough to overtake cars, especially trucks; a journey of 30 minutes became an hour.
Despite being taught very well, I understood all the road signs, overtaking vehicles was a tough moment for me. One day my brother sent me to a company to get some products from a company which was about a 200 km journey. I started driving by 7:00 am in the morning, because of the fear of overtaking trucks. The 4 hour journey became a 12 hour journey. I was unable to overtake trucks even when there were chances to do so, fear of being crushed by trucks and accidents was in my body.
When a big truck was coming behind me, I switched on my parking light; I stopped my car and allowed the truck to pass. I was there for 10 minutes before embarking on my journey.
I was moving as if my car was faulty until I reached my destination. My brother understood, and he didn't call me or disturb me throughout the journey.
When I reached my big brother's company, he smiled; he knew how difficult the journey would be.
When I reached the company and we offloaded the products, “Chris, since you drive the car to the company, drive us home," I replied, please sir, I'm tired.
I was afraid of driving my big brother and the two kids. If anything happens, it would be disastrous to the family.
As time went on, He kept on sending me to nearby places, and I started driving the family to the church. My confidence grew and I was no longer afraid like before.
The next time he sent me to the company, I was not afraid of trucks; It was easy for me to overtake trucks. In my first journey, my speed limit was 40-60; in the second time, my speed was above 90. Overtaking trucks was no longer my fear, I was competing with other cars on the road.
initially, it seemed impossible but as I kept on driving, it became possible for me.
