You see, my little “cold warrior” in the room wasn't cooling as well as it used to. I took it out of the window and, to my surprise (although I already suspected it), the amount of dirt that had accumulated was impressive! The drain was leaking and the tray was full of mold and dust. Take a look at these photos to see the reality of the situation... 🤯

Lo saqué de la ventana y, para mi sorpresa (aunque ya me lo imaginaba), ¡la cantidad de sucio acumulado era impresionante! El drenaje goteaba y la bandeja estaba llena de moho y polvo. Keeping an air conditioner clean is crucial, not only so that it cools well and doesn't consume so much energy, but also for the quality of the air we breathe. In small units like this one, the buildup can be brutal and affect overall performance.
Mantener limpio un aire acondicionado es crucial, no solo para que enfríe bien y no consuma tanta energía, sino también por la calidad del aire que respiramos. En unidades pequeñas como esta, la acumulación puede ser brutal y afectar todo el rendimiento.
So, with patience and following a few essential steps, I got to work. If you want to give it a try too, here's how I did it!

Step 1: Safety First! Turn Off and Unplug the Equipment 🚨
Before touching a single screw, I made sure the air conditioner was completely turned off and unplugged. This is non-negotiable to avoid accidents! Even though it's a 110V air conditioner, it has to be done.
Paso 1: ¡Seguridad Primero! Apagar y Desconectar el Equipo 🚨
Antes de tocar un solo tornillo, me aseguré de que el aire estuviera completamente apagado y desconectado de la corriente. ¡Esto es innegociable para evitar accidentes!, aunque es un aire de 110V hay que hacerlo.
Step 2: Remove the Front Panel and Filters
Carefully remove the front panel to access the interior. In my case, I had to remove the entire unit from the window.
You wouldn't believe how much dirt accumulates!
Once out, I removed the air filter. It definitely needed a good wash!
Paso 2: Retirar el Panel Frontal y los Filtros
Con cuidado, quité el panel frontal para acceder al
interior. En mi caso, tuve que sacar toda la unidad de la
ventana.
¡No saben la cantidad de suciedad que se acumula!
Una vez fuera, retiré el filtro de aire. ¡Este sí que necesitaba una buena ducha!
Step 3: Cleaning the Filters (The Heart of Air Quality!)
The filters are the heart of cleanliness. I gently washed them by hand with warm water and a little mild detergent. I rinsed them thoroughly and let them air dry completely before reinstalling them.

aire!)
Los filtros son el corazón de la limpieza. Los lavé
suavemente a mano con agua tibia y un poco de detergente
suave. Los enjuagué bien y los dejé secar completamente al
aire antes de reinstalarlos.
Step 4: Accessing and Protecting the Internal Components 🛡️
This is the part where you have to be most methodical. Since my unit is a window unit, the first thing I did was isolate the electrical control box by wrapping it in a plastic bag to protect it from water. We don't want a short circuit! I also made sure I had access to all the turbine blades.

Paso 4: Acceder y Proteger los Componentes Internos 🛡️
Esta es la parte donde hay que ser más metódico. Como mi
unidad es de ventana, lo primero fue aislar la caja de
controles eléctricos, envolviéndola con una bolsa plástica
para protegerla del agua. ¡No queremos un cortocircuito!
También me aseguré de tener acceso a todas las aspas de la
turbina.

Step 5: The Big Cleanup: Turbine, Coils, and Drainage ✨
This is where you really see the “before and after.”
Mechanical Cleaning of the Turbine: Using a soft brush (an old toothbrush is your best friend here!), I set about cleaning each turbine blade. The amount of dirt that had accumulated was surprising, especially on the back!
Paso 5: La Gran Limpieza: Turbina, Serpentines y Drenaje

Aquí es donde realmente se ve el "antes y después".
Limpieza Mecánica de la Turbina: Con un cepillo suave (¡un
cepillo de dientes viejo es tu mejor amigo aquí!), me
dediqué a limpiar cada aspa de la turbina. La suciedad
acumulada es sorprendente, ¡sobre todo en la parte
trasera!
Step 6: Careful Reassembly 🧩
Once everything (turbine, coils, and filter) was completely dry—and I mean completely dry!—I proceeded to put everything back together. If you disconnect any cables, take pictures! That will save your life when it comes time to identify them. I put the front panel back on, making sure everything fit perfectly.
Paso 6: Reensamblaje Cuidadoso 🧩
Una vez que todo (turbina, serpentines y filtro) estuvo
completamente seco, ¡y hablo de completamente seco!,
procedí a armar todo de nuevo. Si desconectas cables,
¡toma fotos! Eso te salvará la vida al momento de
identificarlos. Coloqué de nuevo el panel frontal,
asegurándome de que todo encajara perfectamente.
Step 7: Turn on and check ✅
Finally, I reconnected the air conditioner to the power supply and turned it on. The difference was immediate! The air cools much faster, feels cooler, and even the equipment runs more quietly. I am completely satisfied!
Paso 7: Encender y Verificar ✅
Finalmente, volví a conectar el aire acondicionado a la
corriente y lo encendí. ¡La diferencia fue inmediata! El
aire enfría mucho más rápido, se siente más fresco y hasta
el equipo funciona más silencioso. ¡La satisfacción es
total!
¡De vuelta en su lugar, funcionando como nuevo!
My Conclusion and an Extra Tip:
This project reminded me that we shouldn't be afraid to try to do things ourselves. In addition to saving money, the satisfaction of doing it is invaluable. Regular maintenance (at least every 6 months or annually, depending on use) not only ensures good performance, but also helps the equipment run efficiently in terms of energy, reducing your electricity bill!
Mi Conclusión y un Consejo Extra:
Este proyecto me recordó que no hay que temer a intentar
hacer las cosas por nosotros mismos. Además de ahorrar
dinero, la satisfacción de hacerlo es invaluable. Un
mantenimiento periódico (al menos cada 6 meses o
anualmente, según el uso) no solo asegura un buen
rendimiento, sino que también contribuye a que el equipo
funcione eficientemente a nivel energético, ¡reduciendo tu
factura de luz!
